Have you ever farted and liked it? Come on – don’t be shy!
Okay, so maybe it’s an odd question but if we’re really honest without ourselves, a good number of us will secretly admit to enjoying, or at least tolerating, our own gaseous aroma. But there’s more to the story than just the smell.
In fact, you could blame your parents for your stinky output, if they, too, are frequent flatulates. According to Elizabeth Millard, why you like the smell of your own farts can have as much to do with familiarity as it does your actual family because, “if your dear ol’ mom and dad were stinkbombs, there’s a huge chance you will be too.”
My mom farted once a year – no joke! But that one fart could clear out a Woolworth’s store in a minute flat. I clearly remember the last time she farted, one aisle over from the candy. The tsunami of methane caught in my throat. Gagging, I choked out, “Ewww – gross.”
Mom giggled so hard I thought she’d peed herself. And that would’ve been funny to me!
That said, I must blame my flatulence on the foods I consume. I’m a Flexitarian, meaning that I mostly consume a Vegetarian diet but occasionally eat meat. And a lot of my favorite veggies happen to be cruciferous ones, like broccoli, brussels sprouts, and nuts.
As science would have it, these tasty tidbits also produce the most sulfate which is poorly absorbed by the small intestine and helps produce large quantities of methane.
“The fart is the ugly stepchild of bodily functions,” says Cory Levitan, “the sneeze, the cough, and the hiccup have earned their place in proper society. Even the burp is excusable. But farts still get no respect."
Farts have rightfully earned their place in history and we American’s even proclaimed January 7th as National Pass Gas Day.
I can’t make this stuff up!
